38th Annual Decker Challenge Half Marathon

Come join us on Sunday, December 11th at 8 AM for the 2016 running of this classic Austin race around beautiful Decker Lake in east Austin. Each registrant receives a technical race shirt and each finisher receives a highly-coveted Decker Challenge finisher’s medal!

The Decker Challenge is the third race of five races in the Austin Runners Club’s Distance Challenge. Net proceeds from the Distance Challenge will benefit The Trail Foundation.

Packet pickup

Packet pickup will be at Rogue Running (410 Pressler St) at the following times:

  • Friday, 12/9: 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • Saturday, 12/10, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Race day pickup at the Travis County Expo Center will only be available to out of towners and participants that register on race day. All other participants must pick up their race packet at Rogue Running.

Race Day Parking

FREE parking will be available for all participants, volunteers, and spectators of both the Decker Challenge and the Brown Santa 5k at the Expo Center grounds. The parking lot is close to both the Start/Finish line and the Banquet Hall. Enter the grounds through the main entrance off Decker Lane and follow parking volunteers’ directions.

Because traffic in Austin is always unpredictable, we suggest all participants aim to get to the Expo Center to park at or before 7:15AM. The Expo center will be open before the race, and there is plenty of room inside to relax, stretch, use a real restroom, and get excited before making your way to the starting line. Nothing’s worse than stressing out about parking moments before a race! The race will start at 8AM.

Weather/Clothing Drop

Race day weather is looking promising! We’re expecting clear skies and temperatures in the 40s-50s for the race. We’re proud to offer a clothing drop at mile 2, right by the water station. You can toss your outer layers to us, and we’ll bring them back to the Expo Center for you to claim after the race. (Pro-Tip: We aren’t responsible for any lost items, so be sure to put your name on your gloves, and think twice before chucking your favorite jacket!)

Call Your Shot!

New for 2015, we are excited to present the Call Your Shot competition! To participate, submit a prediction for your finish time before you run Decker. The two male and female finishers that come closest to their called shot will win a free pair of shoes! Winners will be announced in the days following the race and shoes will be available for pickup at Rogue Running. In the case of a tie, the finisher that runs the most even pace for the whole race will be the winner.

If you are already registered, you can send your Called Shot (HH:MM:SS) to callyourshot@eventdatasolutions.com. Please submit no later than December 4th.

The Course

We are a USATF-certified half marathon course with mile markers at every mile. We will have six water and sports drink stops along the course, approximately every two miles. See course and elevation maps.

The Decker Challenge has a course limit of 4 hours (a pace of 18:18/mile). At noon, the roads will reopen to traffic, and participants still on the course will not receive an official finish time. If you think you may be close to the course limit, please contact vicepresident@austinrunners.org by noon on Friday, Dec 4 about the option to start the race half an hour early. Early starters will receive an official time and a medal, but will be ineligible for the Call Your Shot competition and age group awards.

Rules

Runners are permitted to run with music. To ensure the safety of yourself and other runners, please be aware of your surroundings.

Running with a stroller is discouraged. Participation by runners under the age of 16 is discouraged, though exceptions can be made. Please notify vicepresident@austinrunners.org for exceptions.

If you plan on racing in a wheelchair, please read our wheelchair policy and contact vicepresident@austinrunners.org so we can assure your safe participation.

Timing

Decker is a chip-timed race. Each finisher will see two times in their results–clock time and chip time. Clock time is the time between when the race officially starts and when you cross the finish line. Chip time is the time between when you cross the starting line and when you cross the finish line. Since many runners don’t cross the starting line until a short while after the official start, your chip time is a better measure of the time you took to complete the course.

Overall award winners (top three) will be decided by gun time and age group winners (including masters) will be decided by chip time.

Awards

We will be presenting awards to top 3 male and female finishers in the following categories: Overall, Masters, and Age Group (19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+). See our awards page for more details.

Pacers

We will have pacers at Decker! Learn more about the pace team here.

Parking

There will be plenty of parking on the Expo Center grounds close to both the Start/Finish and the Banquet Hall. Enter the grounds through the main entrance off Decker Lane and follow parking volunteers’ directions.
